Title: Leveling the Playing Field: Socioeconomic Impact on Student Persistence
Abstract: A southern U.S. state ranks low in educational attainment, with high poverty and low median household income influencing postsecondary outcomes. Our planned mixed-methods study will explore low-income students’ experiences at two public universities to identify barriers to persistence. Our research aims to uncover gaps in awareness and access to scholarships, financial aid, and support services. The findings will provide insights to improve retention through targeted interventions and enhanced education on financial resources, ultimately working to level the playing field for underserved student populations.
